Mavel, a.s. Signs Contracts for Five Projects in South Korea

Benesov, Czech Republic and Boston, MA –16 August 2010 - Mavel, a.s. announced the signing of contracts to provide hydraulic design and turbines and related technology for the Yipo, Gangjeong, Hapcheon, Nakdan and Seungcheon hydroelectric power plants ( “HPP”) in South Korea. In all Mavel is providing 11 turbines which will have installed power totaling about 16.3 MW.

According to Martin Sintak, Mavel’s Commercial Director, “There is “4 Rivers Project” in South Korea”, which is significant project for regulation of 4 major rivers in South Korea including construction of 16 hydroelectric power plants. Mavel welcomes the opportunity to be part of this significant project.”

The Yipo HPP is on the Han River and and has nominal net head of 2.28 meters and total flow of 168 cubic meters per second. Mavel will provide three double regulated Kaplan PIT turbines type KP3400K3 with runner diameter of 3400 mm and three runner blades. The total installed power will be approximately 3,330 kW.

The Ganjeong HPP, Hapcheon HPP and the Nakdan HPP are all situated on the Nakdong River. Ganjeong HPP has nominal head of 5.1 meters and total nominal flow of 73 cubic meters per second. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan PIT turbines type KP2500K4 with runner diameter of 2500 mm and four runner blades. The total installed power will be approximately 3,300 kW. For the Hapcheon HPP nominal head is 5.11 meters and nominal flow is 123 cubic meters per second. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan PIT turbines type KP3400K4 with runner diameter of 3400 mm and four runner blades. Total installed power will be 5,536 kW.

The Nakdan HPP has nominal net head of 7.1 meters and flow of 52 cubic meters per second. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan PIT turbines type KP2240K4 with 2240 mm runner diameters and four runner blades. Installed power will be 3,252 kW. The last site HPP Seungcheon is on the Yeongsang River and has nominal net head of 3.5 meters and total nominal flow of 28 cubic meters per second. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan bulb turbines type KA1580K3 with runner diameters of 1580 mm and three runner blades. Total installed power will be 862 kW.

For all projects Mavel’s scope includes turbines, hydraulic units and gearboxes. The contracts for all projects were signed in the first half of 2010 with commissioning expected during the second half of 2011. The owner / final customer for all the projects is K-Water. Mavel is a subcontractor to EPC contractors for all five contracts.
