Mavel, a.s. Announces the Commissioning of Two New Power Plants Near Chatillon, Italy.

Benesov, Czech Republic  – 27 October 2008 – Mavel, a.s. announced the successful commissioning of the Pontey I and Pontey II hydroelectric power plants near Chatillon, in northwest Italy - 25 kilometres south of the Matterhorn and 160 kilometres north of Milan. 

Mavel delivered four turbines and related technology as part of its contract with ABB Italy, the primary contractor.  The initial contact was signed in May 2005 and the project was delayed due to flooding during the spring of 2006. 

Energia Plassier, an energy producer and distributor based in Milan, owns the two sites.

Pontey I will utilize two Mavel Kaplan bulb turbines with runner diameter 1800 mm and three runner blades; bevel gear box, two vertical synchronous generators and a hydraulic pressure unit.  ABB Italy provided the electrical balance of plant which will include the control system, switchgear, transformer and cabling. The plant has net head of 3.88 meters, flow of 17.35 m3/s per unit and has installed power of 884 kW.

          The Pontey II site has slightly different parameters with head of 4.61 meters and flow of 13.85 m3/s per unit.  The installed power is 960 kW.  Mavel’s scope of supply included two Kaplan bulb turbines with runner diameter of 1580 mm and four blades, a bevel gear box, two vertical synchronous generators and the hydraulic pressure unit.  ABB Italy supplied all of the electronic equipment for this plant as well.
