Mavel Commissions 19th Project in Baltic Region - Signs Agreements for 3 More

Benesov, Czech Republic – 12 April 2004- Mavel a.s., a Czech producer of technology for hydroelectric power plants, announced the commissioning on March 23, 2004 of the 600 kW Jurbarkai hydro-electric power plant in Lithuania.

The site on the Jurbarkai reservoir, about 140 km west of Vilnius, has head of 8 meters and flow of 9 m3/s. The new Jurbarkai hydro plant utilizes a Mavel double regulated, vertical Kaplan with a runner diameter of 1.3 meters and gearbox. Mavel also supplied the electric and control system with visualization, data transmission and remote control option.

Mavel has delivered 27 complete turbine sets operating in 19 hydro plants in the Baltic region over the past four years. Mavel attributes its success in the Baltics, primarily to the establishment of a representative venture which provides sales support, diagnostics, customer service, repairs and storage of spare parts.

Mavel also announced the signing of contracts for the delivery of turbines and related technology for an added three sites in Lithuania: Volungiskai, Girdzaj and Balskai. The largest of the new projects is Balskai, with head of 13 meters and flow of 25m3/s. Commissioning of this 3 MW plant using two Mavel vertical Kaplan turbines is expected for autumn 2004.


Turbine
Mavel provides engineering and technology, including Kaplan, Francis and Pelton turbines, for hydroelectric power plants from 2 kW to 20 MW. Over the past ten years, Mavel has delivered almost 250 turbines for over 180 installations. The company employs 150 persons and has two production facilities in the Czech Republic. Mavel cooperates on many projects with its subsidiary CKD TurboTechnics.
